It's Not Rocket Science, Folks! [Sep. 2nd, 2008|08:29 am]

[Current Music |Moving Units - "Between Us & Them"]

I spent a few hours with a coworker who's currently in an outpatient rehabilitation program after work yesterday. He's off to a good start with 15 days under his belt. Conversation varied, but the constant theme was how to stay on the right track when almost everyone seems to be on the wrong one. I'm not sure that I was the right person to talk to at this point, but with 15.5 years under my belt I have to be doing something right. Heh.

Over the years, I've made a considerable amount of poor choices where friends and relationships are concerned. Who hasn't? I've learned from those mistakes, even if I continue to enjoy repeat performances. The key element is identifying when those you choose to surround yourself with are more of a hazard to your progress than help. Naturally, parting ways and moving forward is the next step. Staying sober is a extremely selfish thing when sliced and examined under a microscope. It requires a significant amount discipline and the ability to be a prick from time to time.

Where the heartache begins: When the realization that those you hold near and dear are more concerned with self-gratification than your best interests, the heart has a tendency to hurt a little. John Lennon said it best,"Living is easy with eyes closed". It's true. I'm not sure when dysfunction became fashionable, but its ugly head can be seen on every street corner. My friend is just starting to see that forest for trees...I handed him a chainsaw.

To be continued.
